E. Jean Carroll's testimony before Donald Trump reconstructed in new document

A quartet of actresses will be giving their first on-camera testimony as E. Jean Carroll during her defamation and sexual assault trial against Donald Trump in the upcoming documentary, E. Jean Carroll V. Donald J. Trump.

Kathryn Hahn, Ellen Burstyn and Lexi Underwood will all play Carroll in the film’s reenactments, while Regina Taylor will play Carroll’s attorney, Roberta Kaplan. Carroll, a journalist who spent 25 years writing an advice column for Elle, accused Trump of raping her in a department store in the 1990s. She filed a civil lawsuit against the former president after he responded to her allegations by calling her a liar and denying ever meeting her — allegations Carroll has called false and defamatory.

Carroll ultimately won that lawsuit earlier this year, first winning $5 million in damages, and then a second jury awarded him an additional $83 million for emotional and reputational harm. Trump has appealed both decisions.

Carroll’s testimony about Trump’s alleged assault was a key part of the trial, but as the trailer for the new documentary points out, it wasn’t captured on camera. In the trailer’s opening moments, Hahn, Burstyn and Underwood pluck her words from the pages of court transcripts for the first time, saying together, “I’m here because Donald Trump raped me. He lied and he destroyed my reputation and I’m here to try to get my life back.”

The film E. Jean Carroll V. Donald J. Trump is set to arrive on October 3. It was produced by the production company Brave New Films, which has made documentaries on other subjects such as the Koch brothers, gun violence and the criminal justice system.
