“Hamas is a resistance group that defends its lands”
“From 1947 to today, Palestine has reached the present day by losing its lands many times,” Erdogan said in an interview with the American channel NBC News on Tuesday.
Asked whether “some people criticize you, Turkey, because you shelter Hamas, which the United States considers a terrorist group, and you say you are opposed to terrorism,” Erdogan replied: “We are, of course, against terrorists.”
“But I am one of the leaders who knows Hamas well. I have never called Hamas a terrorist organization and I do not consider Hamas a terrorist organization.
“Because Hamas is a resistance group that strives to protect its lands. So how can I call such a resistance group a terrorist organization?” Erdogan said.
In response to a question about the October 7 Hamas attacks on Israel, the president said the context of the incident should be examined.
“We need to know the reasons that prepared the conditions of October 7. We need to understand them well. And when we look at the context, the number of Palestinians who were martyred, the number of Palestinians who were killed, the situation reaches very, very different levels,” he added.
