Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Pune today was cancelled due to heavy rains in the city.
The Prime Minister was scheduled to inaugurate a new metro line in Pune and other development projects in the city. With Maharashtra set to hold elections, the BJP was also expected to make its voice heard today.
Besides the metro line, Prime Minister Modi was also scheduled to unveil a high-performance computing system at the city's Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM) to enhance weather and climate research.
Pune and its surrounding areas received over 131 mm of rain on Wednesday, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said.
Following incessant rains, Pune District Collector Suhas Diwase declared Thursday a holiday for all schools and colleges in Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad.
The meteorological department had issued a red alert for Pune on Wednesday. Heavy rains in the city caused flooding and traffic jams. Torrential rains continued to lash the city throughout the night and into the early hours of Thursday.
Several regions of Maharashtra The torrential rains also caused severe flooding, disrupting train, bus and flight services in Mumbai and Pune. Train and bus services were restored as of Thursday morning, with water levels receding in many areas.
Meanwhile, the Central Railway confirmed that all local trains are now operational, although services on the main line are running 3-4 minutes late due to rescheduled express runs and security measures. Western Railway suburban services have also been restored, despite torrential rains, as water has receded at several stations.
