What is Param Rudra supercomputer launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi
Developed locally under the National supercomputing missionthree PARAM Rudra supercomputers were recently launched virtually by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. With supercomputers, a budget of 850 million High performance computing (HPC), designed for meteorological and climatic researchwas also launched at the event. During the event, the Prime Minister highlighted India's progress towards self-reliance in IT and innovation in science and technology.
He further said that a country can only aim for great achievements if it has a great vision and technological upgrades should lead to the betterment of the poor. The three supercomputers were built at a cost of 130 crores and were stationed in Pune. , Delhi and Calcutta. They will contribute to scientific research in areas such as astronomy, medicine and high-energy physics.
The features of the PARAM Rudra supercomputers were highlighted in a press release, which described them as a significant step towards India's self-reliance in the field of supercomputer technology. They were developed by the Center for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC).
In Pune, the supercomputer is deployed at the Giant Meter Radio Telescope (GMRT), where it will help study fast radio bursts (FRBs) and other astronomical phenomena. The second will be used by the Inter-University Acceleration Center (IUAC) in Delhi for research in areas such as materials science and atomic physics. Similarly, the third supercomputer is installed at the SN Bose Center in Kolkata, where it will facilitate research in areas such as physics, cosmology and Earth sciences.
In terms of petaflop capacity, the most powerful is installed at the Inter-University Acceleration Center (IUAC) in Delhi, with a capacity of 3 petaflops. The GMRT supercomputer has a capacity of 1 petaflop and that of Kolkata has a capacity of 838 teraflops.
The HPC system is also a major asset for weather and climate research and has been installed in two atmospheric institutes, one in Pune and the other in Noida. HPC Arka is an upgrade to the country's current horizontal resolution of its global weather forecast models, and HPC Arunika will improve the resolution of block-level weather forecasts. Arka and Arunika have capacities of 11.77 petaflops and 8.24 petaflops, respectively.
The National Supercomputing Mission is an ambitious initiative of the Government of India, launched in 2015, with the aim of building a bridge between national academic institutions and research and development institutions through the provision of high-end computing facilities.
