Modi inaugurates Pune Metro section, lays foundation stone of Rs 11,200 cr projects in Maharashtra
PUNE: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday inaugurated and laid the foundation stone of various Rs 11,200 crore projects in Maharashtra through video conferencing.
His visit to Pune scheduled for September 26 was canceled due to heavy rains in the city.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi said the dual-engine government, under the leadership of Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, has focused on infrastructure development and connectivity in metropolitan cities of Maharashtra.
“The concept of Pune Metro came in 2008, but it was our government that started working on developing the metro in 2016. The previous government did nothing to connect important places by metro and road, but our government is only focused on development,” the Prime Minister said.
Prime Minister Modi also praised the work of the Mahayuti government. “Pune city has grown and its population is also increasing. Therefore, it is the duty of the government to provide all the state-of-the-art infrastructure and facilities to make life easier in metropolitan cities,” Modi said.
Prime Minister Modi virtually inaugurated the Pune Metro section from District Court to Swargate, which also marks the completion of the Pune Metro Rail Project (Phase 1).
The cost of the underground section between the district court and Swargate is around Rs 1,810 crore, according to officials.
Modi also laid the foundation stone of the Swargate-Katraj extension of Pune Metro Phase 1 which will be developed at a cost of around Rs 2,955 crore.
This 5.46 km southern extension is completely underground and has three stations, namely Market Yard, Padmavati and Katraj, according to officials.
Modi also inaugurated the Bidkin Industrial Zone, a transformative project covering a vast area of 7,855 acres under the National Industrial Corridor Development Program, located 20 km south of Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar in Maharashtra.
The project developed under the Delhi-Mumbai Industrial Corridor holds immense potential as a vibrant economic hub in the Marathwada region, officials said.
The central government has approved this project with an overall cost of over Rs 6,400 crore for development in three phases, they said.
PM Modi also inaugurated the Solapur Airport, which would significantly improve connectivity, making Solapur more accessible to tourists, business travelers and investors.
The existing terminal at Solapur has been redeveloped to accommodate nearly 4.AG1 lakh passengers per year, officials said.
Modi also laid the foundation stone for the memorial of Krantijyoti Savitribai Phule's first girls' school in Bhidewada.
A cultural and skills center will be developed as well as a library as part of the memorial.
