PM Modi appreciates return of Indian artifacts to US in 114th episode of 'Mann ki Baat'

New Delhi [India]September 29 (ANI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi recalled his recent visit to the United States and appreciated the return of around 300 Indian items stolen or trafficked from India.
Addressing the 114th episode of his monthly radio show 'Mann Ki Baat', PM Modi said there was a lot of talk about the return of ancient artifacts and the US had returned around 300 Indian artifacts ancient and that many of them were even 4000 years old.
He said many items had been taken out of the country through smuggling and other illegal means and this amounted to “destroying Indian heritage”.
Prime Minister Modi appreciated the fact that over the last decade, many such items have been brought back to the country.
“During my visit to the United States, the US government returned about 300 ancient artifacts to India. US President Biden very affectionately showed me some of these artifacts at his private residence in Delaware. The returned artifacts are made materials such as terracotta, stone, ivory, wood, copper and bronze, many of them are four thousand years old,” he said.
“Many of these items were taken out of the country through smuggling and other illegal means. This is a serious crime. In a way, it amounts to destroying our heritage. But I am very happy that over the last decade, many artifacts and many of our ancient heirlooms have been brought back home,” PM Modi added.
PM Modi said among the items returned were vases, terracotta plaques of gods and goddesses, statues of Jain Tirthankaras, as well as statues of Buddha and Krishna and several animal statuettes . There were terracotta tiles from Jammu and Kashmir, bronze idols of Lord Ganesha from South India and images of Lord Vishnu mainly from North and South India, which were also restored by the United States, he said.
“Vases, terracotta plaques representing gods and goddesses, statues of Jain Tirthankaras, as well as statues of Bhagwan Buddha and Bhagwan Shri Krishna, are among the objects returned. Several animal statuettes are also among the objects returned. From Jammu and Kashmir, terracotta tiles bearing male and female figures are also very interesting. These are bronze idols of Bhagwan Ganesha from South India. Images of Bhagwan Vishnu are also among the returned artifacts. They are mainly from North and South India,” Prime Minister Modi added.
During Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit earlier this month, the United States officially returned 297 antiquities stolen or trafficked to India.
According to an official statement, some of the antiques returned include a terracotta vase from East India, a sandstone Buddha sculpture from UP, a bronze Vishnu idol from East India, a copper anthropomorphic figure from North India, a bronze Jain Tirthankara idol from South India, sandstone apsara sculpture from Central India, limestone sculpture from South India, a conical vase East Indian terracotta, East Indian terracotta rattle, approximately 178 East Indian terracotta figures, approximately 47 North Indian antiques and sculptures from Jammu and Kashmir, among others.
