Dilma Rousseff receives China's highest honor from Xi Jinping
247 The former president of Brazil, Dilma Rousseff, received this Sunday (29), in Beijing, the Medal of Friendship, the highest decoration offered by China to foreign citizens. The honor was presented by Chinese President Xi Jinping during a ceremony at the Great Hall of the People, marking celebrations of the 75th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China.
Currently heading the New Development Bank (NBD), based in Shanghai, Dilma has been recognized for her contribution to strengthening relations between Brazil and China. During the ceremony, Xi Jinping highlighted Rousseff's role as an “excellent representative of China's old friends” and praised her commitment to developing cooperation between the two countries.
In her speech, Rousseff thanked her for the distinction, emphasizing the importance of friendship between the Chinese and Brazilian people. “This medal symbolizes the long-standing friendship between the Chinese people and the rest of the world,” the former president said. She also praised Xi Jinping for his leadership and efforts in building a “shared future of common prosperity for all humanity”, praising China's economic, technological and social achievements over the past four decades.
Besides Dilma, the Chinese president also awarded other figures with the Republic Medal and national honorary titles, such as war hero Huang Zongde and other Chinese citizens who distinguished themselves in different fields. Dilma was the only foreigner honored at the ceremony.
The event also highlighted the trajectory of the former Brazilian president, deposed in 2016 after a controversial impeachment process, widely seen by her supporters as a coup d'état. During his tenure, Brazil established a comprehensive strategic partnership with China, becoming the first Latin American country to sign such an agreement with the Asian giant.
