AKP wants feedback on new constitution
ANKARA
The ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) plans to create a center within parliament to collect expectations for a new constitution, its parliamentary leader said.
“A center should be created within our parliament where associations, foundations, universities, workers, employers and non-governmental organizations can express their opinions on what they expect from the new constitution,” Abdullah said Gler told Hrriyet daily in an interview published on September 29.
The AKP will soon engage opposition parties in this initiative, he added.
“From there, our legislative experts should compile the background information and translate the proposals into text,” Gler said. “We must reveal how we can create a 'civil' constitution.”
President Recep Tayyip Erdoan and his AKP have long criticized the current constitution because of its origins in the 1980 military coup.
The call for a new text faces obstacles because the party does not have the parliamentary majority needed to advance the proposal. To bring the process to a referendum would require the support of more than 30 opposition MPs.
Since the beginning of May, Parliament Speaker Numan Kurtulmu has held discussions with representatives of opposition parties regarding this proposal.
