As Trump attacks Harris' mental health, some Republicans keep their distance

WASHINGTON

Republicans sought Sunday to distance themselves from Donald Trump's latest insults against Democratic candidate Kamala Harris during a disjointed weekend in Wisconsin, during which he called her mentally disabled.

Trump escalated his personal attacks on the vice president during what was billed as a speech on immigration following Harris' trip to the U.S.-Mexico border.

Joe Biden has become mentally disabled, Trump said. Kamala was born this way. She was born like that. And if you think about it, only a mentally disabled person could have allowed this to happen to our country. Everyone would know.

Trump has previously falsely claimed that Harris has gone black and regularly insults her by calling her stupid, weak, stupid as a rock, and lazy. With just over a month until the presidential election, his allies have publicly and privately pushed him to instead talk about the economy, immigration and other issues.

I just think the best course is to pursue the case that his policies are destroying the country, Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) said on CNN's State of the Union when asked about Trump's comments . They are crazy liberals.

Asked whether he agreed with those remarks, Rep. Tom Emmer (R-Minn.) dodged during an ABC interview this week.

Former Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan, running for Senate as a moderate Republican, addressed Trump's false claims that Harris, the daughter of Jamaican and Indian immigrants, had previously downplayed her black heritage. Harris attended Howard University, a historically black university, and identified as both black and South Asian throughout her political career.

I already called him out on the one interview where he questioned his racial identity, and now he's questioning his mental competence, Hogan told CBS Face the Nation. And I think it's insulting not only to the vice president but also to people who have mental disabilities.

If elected, Harris would be the first woman, Black and person of South Asian descent, to become president. She did not comment on Trump's recent attacks, but said when asked about other comments that it was the same old show. Trump said last month that he was entitled to personal attacks against Harris.
