New York Mayor Eric Adams pleads not guilty to corruption charges
When Eric Adams became mayor of New York in 2021, people wondered if he was really vegan after ordering fish at his favorite restaurant. Today, the former Democratic police officer is being asked much more serious questions.
He became the first sitting New York mayor to face criminal charges, including wire fraud, bribery and solicitation of illegal foreign campaign donations.
The federal indictment alleges that officials and businessmen close to the Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdoan gave Adams flight upgrades and hotel gifts, and sent him illegal campaign donations via American straw donors, which helped Adams qualify for additional money from public funds of campaign.
The prosecutor called it a multi-year scheme to buy favor with a single New York City official. Adams pleaded not guilty to the charges against him and refused to resign. But New York Governor Kathy Hochul could use a rarely exercised power to remove the mayor from office.
Even the famous mayor of New York, Jimmy Walker, was not indicted during his time in office. The Jazz Age hedonist fled on a steamship to Europe in 1932 after facing corruption allegations and questions about the mysterious disappearance of a Supreme Court justice.
Adams' indictment is a first in 400 years. But the details, if proven, would be news.
Prosecutors allege that Adams:
- accepted more than $100,000 in luxury travel, including fancy meals, free hotel stays and airline upgrades from Turkish nationals. Adams, a parent and a staff member are accused of receiving free business class trips to Sri Lanka, China, France and Turkey.
- He failed to disclose his travel benefits or created false paper trails to conceal them, falsely suggesting he had paid for flights he received for free.
- used American donors to hide illegal foreign contributions to his 2021 mayoral campaign, including those from a Turkish businessman who visited Adams in Brooklyn.
- used those contributions to receive money from a public funding program that matched donations from New York City residents, part of the $10 million the campaign received in public funds.
- pressured New York firefighters to open a Turkish consular building that had failed a fire inspection after a Turkish official told a staffer it was the mayor's turn to repay it.
The skyscraper was duly opened to be ready for a high-profile visit from Erdogan. Adams' attorney said New Yorkers do this all the time.
New York voters can't impeach the mayor, but Democrat Kathy Hochul could use complex powers that haven't been exercised in recent memory. For now, she told Adams to take a few days to think, probably in hopes that he resigns before being pushed.
Although he is a Democrat, Adams suggested his arrest was politically motivated.
Note: it is the Republicans who tend to claim that the White House has weaponized the Department of Justice. But Biden's DOJ has now sued a Democratic senator (Bob Menendez) and a congressman (Henry Cuellar), the president's own son (Hunter), and the mayor of New York.
If convicted, Adams faces 45 years in prison.
