Former British Prime Minister Johnson says Macron wanted to punish Britain for Brexit

French President Emmanuel Macron was a “positive nuisance” during the acrimonious Brexit negotiations and wanted to punish the UK for leaving the EU, former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has claimed.
In the final extracts from his memoir “Unleashed”, due to be published next month, Johnson said the French leader saw Brexit as “a terrible snub to the EU and its worldview”.
Johnson claims in the book, serialized by the Daily Mail newspaper, that Macron tried to “put his Cuban heel boot into Brexit Britain” on various issues during the protracted divorce negotiations.
Johnson – who took power in 2019, three years after Britain voted to leave the European Union – said this meant “weaponizing” the issue of migrants crossing the Channel aboard small boats.
“It seemed to me at least possible that he would use the issue as a weapon, Belarus-style, and quietly allow migrants to pass,” Johnson wrote.
The former British leader added that Macron was “personally charming” and that the two men “often agreed on important issues”, but that “he really meant it when he said that the United Kingdom of Brexit had to be punished.”
“On some issues I fear I have suspected him of being a positive nuisance.”
Johnson also details in his memoir – due for publication in the UK on October 10 – how he “incapacitated the French” by agreeing to the AUKUS military alliance.
The deal that Australia would break a contract to buy nuclear submarines from France and buy them from the United States and the United Kingdom was secretly sealed at a G7 summit in Britain in 2021, according to Johnson.
“My most important task at Carbis Bay was to organize a discreet three-way meeting (…) without being disturbed by the French,” he wrote about the summons of US President Joe Biden and his Australian counterpart Scott Morrison.
“In complete secrecy, we succeeded,” Johnson said, adding that the subsequent announcement meant “they all went to Paris, as you would expect.”
