Imran Khan, Bushra Bibi's bail in Toshakhana case rejected

A court on Monday rejected bail pleas filed by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan and his wife and former first lady Bushra Bibi in the fresh Toshakhana case where they face allegations of abuse of power to acquire state gifts.

Conducting the hearing inside the Adiala jail, where the former prime minister and the first lady also appeared, central special judge Shahrukh Arjumand announced the verdict on the bail pleas filed by the couple .

This development comes as the duo is expected to be charged in the said case on October 2 after the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) was prevented from pursuing the case and the case was transferred to the Federal Investigation Agency ( FIA), as per the Supreme Court. The deposed prime minister was jailed for almost a year following his conviction in four cases, two Toshakhana references, the encryption case and the Iddat case, in which his wife is also incarcerated.

The new Toshakhana reference against the couple emerged after the NAB arrested them soon after a district and sessions court in Islamabad acquitted Khan and Bushra in the iddat case also known as non-Islamic nikah affair.

During today's hearing, the FIA ​​prosecutor said the suspects received the Bulgari (Bvlgari) jewelry set from Saudi Arabia and informed the court that the agency obtained from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs records a necklace and earrings.

“According to the files, the two objects are valued at Rs71.5 million,” said the prosecutor, adding that the couple obtained a value of Rs5.8 million from a private company.

Asking the court to reject the couple's bail application, he further said that the suspects also failed to submit the said jewelry in the Toshakhana repository, a department under the administrative control of the Cabinet Division which stores the valuable gifts given to leaders, parliamentarians, bureaucrats and officials by heads of other governments and states and by foreign dignitaries as a gesture of goodwill.

Representing PTI founder and former first lady, lawyer Salman Safdar argued that the new Toshakhana case was similar to the previous one with similar allegations and approvers.

Referring to the SC's September 6 verdict reinstating the NAB amendments, the lawyer said Toshakhana's case against his clients should end following the top court's decision.

The court then reserved its verdict, then announced it after a break in the hearing.
