Boris Johnson has called Emmanuel Macron a “nuisance” determined to “punish Britain for Brexit”.
The conservative former prime minister accused the French president of “weaponizing” the ongoing small boat crisis during his time in office.
In his next book, Mr Johnson recalls suggesting, although he claimed to be “improvising”, a new road link across the English Channel to connect the two countries.
However, he claims Mr Macron rejected the idea with an abrupt “no”.
In an extract from Mr. Johnson's Unleashed published in the Mail Sundaythe former prime minister said it seemed Macron was “suddenly dismayed at the idea of all these rapacious Brits crossing a bridge into his relatively underpopulated country.”
Mr Johnson went on to say Macron was “personally charming” but seemed determined to punish Britain for leaving the European Union.
He wrote: “Even though Macron was personally charming and although we often agreed on important issues, he really meant it when he said that Brexit Britain should be punished.
“On some issues I fear I have suspected him of being a positive nuisance.”
Mr Johnson also said it seemed “at least possible” that Mr Macron would “campaign” the issue of migrants crossing in small boats.
He said it appeared the French president was allowing “enough numbers to drive the British public crazy and undermine one of the most important facts of Brexit, which is that we have regained control of our borders.”
The extract adds: “I say all this, in reality, to explain why, after a long and determined attempt to build bridges (even literally), I have more or less given up on Macron.
