RAWALPINDI: Cases have been filed against Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur on terrorism charges, alleging them of involvement in violent protests and vandalism in Rawalpindi, The News reported on Monday.

Officials of New Town Police Station filed First Information Reports (FIR) against PTI leaders under Section 7 of the Anti-Terrorism Act (ATA) and relevant sections of the Pakistan Penal Code (PPC) .

Police also said that cases were lodged at four police stations in City, Waris Khan, New Town and RA Bazaar against over 100 PTI leaders and supporters, including Amir Mughal, Simabiah Tahir, MPA Asad Abbas and Ijaz Khan.

A police officer involved in the investigation said that in addition to the charge of conspiracy to commit vandalism, numerous other charges, including interfering with government operations, rioting and attacking a vehicle government officer with a Molotov cocktail, had also been held against them.

Former PM Imran, KP CM Gandapur and 45 other leaders and activists have been named in the first FIR which claims the participants created trouble, obstructed public access by burning tires and created difficulties for citizens.

Police officials reported that five suspects were arrested at the scene, including Khalil, Imran, Sadaqat, Yaseen and Tahir. A bottle of petrol was recovered from the possession of suspect Tahir. The charges included terrorism, attempted murder, vandalism, destruction of public and state property, and interference with government operations.

According to the FIR, the PTI leaders and activists raised anti-government slogans, pelted stones at the police and attacked them with iron rods.

Several police vehicles, including that of SP Rawal, were damaged and a police officer was seriously injured in the eye by a window. The FIR also stated that the accused grabbed government firearms and fired them in the air, causing panic. Police confirmed that cases had been registered and searches were underway to apprehend other suspects.

Meanwhile, police in the federal capital arrested former Jamaat-e-Islami senator Mushtaq Ahmed along with his wife and ten other activists for violating Article 144, during an anti-Israel protest on Sunday.
