Xi Jinping calls for China’s “reunification” with Taiwan on National Day

Chinese President Xi Jinping on Monday reiterated his call for a “reunification” of China with Taiwan, on the eve of the National Day which will commemorate the 75th anniversary of the People's Republic of China.
“Achieving complete reunification of the motherland is the common aspiration of the Chinese people,” Xi told thousands of people gathered in Beijing for a banquet in honor of the National Day on October 1.
“It is an irreversible trend, a question of justice, in accordance with the popular will. No one can stop the march of history,” he stressed.
The People's Republic of China was founded on October 1, 1949 by then-leader Mao Zedong after the communist army's victory in a civil war that lasted two decades.
The conflict pits the communist army against the rival forces of the “Republic of China”, refugees, with many civilians, on the island of Taiwan, one of the rare parts of the territory that the communists have not conquered.
“Taiwn is a sacred territory for China. People on both sides of the Taiwan Strait have blood ties, and these family ties will always be stronger than others,” Xi Jinping said on Monday.
Relations between the Chinese government and that of Taiwan have been at an all-time low since Tsai Ing-wen became president of the island in 2016.
Tsai was replaced in May 2024 by Lai Ching-te who, like his predecessor, favors cutting ties with mainland China.
