Israel has carried out heavy airstrikes in Lebanon in recent days against the “Axis of Resistance,” a network of Iran-aligned militant groups in the region, including Syria, Yemen and Iraq. An Israeli strike in Beirut on Friday killed Hassan Nasrallah, leader of the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah, armed and financed by the Islamic republic for years.
Over the past week, Israel has frequently targeted Beirut's southern suburbs, where Hezbollah has a strong presence, including in Friday's major strike that killed Nasrallah but did not hit communities near the city center.
Hezbollah's interim leader Naim Kassem said in a televised statement that if Israel launched a ground offensive, the group's fighters would be ready. He said the slain commanders had already been replaced. Lebanon's Health Ministry said at least 105 people were killed in airstrikes across the country on Sunday. Two strikes near the southern town of Sidon, about 45 kilometers south of Beirut, killed at least 32 people, the ministry said. Separately, Israeli strikes in the northern province of Baalbek Hermel killed 21 people and injured at least 47. Lebanese media reported dozens of strikes nationwide. Israel says it is targeting militants, but the strikes have hit buildings where civilians lived and the death toll is expected to rise.
