“UNGA should impose resolution on use of force against Israel”

President Recep Tayyip Erdoan said that if the UN Security Council does not take action against Israeli aggression, the General Assembly reserves the right to impose Resolution 377 “unite for peace” to recommend the use of force.

The resolution was adopted by the UNGA on November 3, 1950 and provides that if the UNSC fails to fulfill its duty to preserve international peace, the general body may make appropriate recommendations to take collective action.

These measures include the use of armed forces when necessary, in cases of breach of the peace or to maintain or restore international peace and security.

Erdoan's call comes as Israel prepares a ground invasion of Lebanon, in addition to its ongoing aggression in Gaza, where it has killed more than 41,000 people, mostly women and children.

“Defending Palestine and Lebanon today means defending humanity, peace and the coexistence of different faiths and different ways of life,” Erdoan told reporters after a cabinet meeting in Ankara, the capital.

He noted that more than a million Lebanese civilians have already been displaced due to Israeli violence, as Trkiye works to send humanitarian aid supplies, with the latest 30 tons of aid arriving in Beirut Wednesday.

“We have accelerated our diplomatic efforts to stop Israel's attacks. The international community can no longer remain silent in the face of Israel's thuggish acts,” Erdoan said, adding that Muslim countries must respond as much as possible to the aggression by Israel.

“We will never accept this oppression, this barbarity. We will not submit to their impudence,” he added.

“A handful of bloodthirsty, hateful, radical Zionists are setting fire to our region and the entire world,” the president said, warning that Israeli aggression threatens the peace of all in the region, including Muslims, Jews and Christians.

Ankara has accused Tel Aviv of seeking to expand the ongoing conflict with the Palestinians to a wider region since October 7. Trkiye also criticized the UN for becoming a dysfunctional global body, which fails to fulfill its founding mission.

Trkiye's top diplomat Hakan Fidan said the assassination of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah, the latest in Israel's escalating military actions, highlighted Tel Aviv's desire to expand the ongoing conflict with the Palestinians to a wider region. He also deplored American support for Israel.

Since September 23, Israel has launched massive airstrikes against what it calls Hezbollah targets across Lebanon, killing more than 900 people and injuring more than 2,700 others, according to the Lebanese Health Ministry. Several Hezbollah commanders were killed in the Israeli assault, including its leader Hassan Nasrallah. Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz said Thursday morning that Tel Aviv would only agree to a ceasefire in Lebanon when Hezbollah is pushed back from the border north of the Litani River and disarmed. border war since the start of the Israeli war against Gaza, which killed nearly 41,600 people, mostly women and children, following a cross-border attack by the Palestinian group Hamas on October 7. The international community has warned that Israeli attacks in Lebanon could turn the Gaza conflict into a wider regional war.
