Chinese Xi warns people of potential dangers as country marks 75th anniversary of its republic
ISTANBUL
China's president on Monday warned his 1.4 billion citizens of “potential dangers” while emphasizing the goal of Taiwan's complete unification with the mainland.
“We must remain aware of potential dangers and be well prepared,” Xi Jinping said at an event at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the People's Republic of China.
After 75 years of “strenuous efforts,” Xi said “China’s modernization has opened up promising prospects,” according to the official Xinhua News.
China has celebrated its National Day every year on October 1 since its founding in 1949.
Regarding Taiwan, an autonomous country, Xi said the island nation was “an integral part of Chinese territory.”
Highlighting efforts to deepen economic and cultural exchanges and cooperation across the Taiwan Strait, Xi called for “resolute” efforts to “oppose separatist activities aimed at Taiwan independence.”
While China claims all of Taiwan, the island nation of around 24 million people has retained its independence since 1949.
Earlier in the day, Xi led Communist Party and state leaders to central Beijing's Tiananmen Square – scene of tumultuous 1989 protests – to pay tribute to fallen heroes as China marked September 30 as National Martyrs' Day since 2014.
“Taiwan is China's sacred territory, and people on both sides of the Taiwan Strait are related by blood, and blood is thicker than water,” Xi said.
“We should adhere to the one-China principle and the 1992 Consensus, deepen cross-Strait economic and cultural exchanges and cooperation, and promote the spiritual harmony of compatriots on both sides of the Taiwan Strait.” said Mr. Xi, who is leading China for the first time. an unprecedented third term.
“Achieving the complete reunification of the homeland is the general trend, the just cause and the will of the people. No one can stop the wheel of history,” he stressed.
While emphasizing the peaceful reunification of the two sides divided by the Taiwan Strait, Beijing has not ruled out the use of force to take control of the island nation.
Xi's comments on Taiwan came hours after his main rival, the United States, announced military aid worth $567 million to Taiwan, triggering a sharp response from Beijing.
In addition to its growing rivalry with Washington, Beijing acknowledged last week that the world's second-largest economy was facing “new problems.”
