Trump says he 'hated' paying overtime

Former President Donald Trump proposed a tax break for overtime, which he hated paying as an employer.

Discussing his new proposal to end overtime taxes at a campaign rally in Erie, Pennsylvania, on Sunday, Trump recalled his own aversion to the practice.

Earlier this month, at a campaign event in Tucson, Trump outlined a policy proposal to end overtime taxes. This was Trump's third policy proposal to end taxes on certain forms of income. However, tax cuts passed in 2017 under Trump are set to expire in 2025, giving the new administration the opportunity to change the tax code.

At the rally in Erie, Trump touted his own familiarity with overtime pay, thanks to his experience in the private sector. Many people don't give, Trump said. I know a lot about overtime. I hated working overtime.

Trump then recalled how he would recruit new employees to replace those who were expected to work overtime. Although he seemed to realize that there were some political responsibilities in his telling of the story.

I shouldn't say this, but I would bring other people in, Trump said. I wouldn't pay. I hated it.

A recent study by the nonpartisan Tax Foundation estimates that cutting overtime taxes would cost $227 billion over 10 years. Trump's three proposals would increase the budget deficit by a total of $6.8 trillion, according to the Tax Foundation.

However, Trump framed the policy as an incentive for people to seek jobs, singling out police, nurses and construction workers who would benefit. During his speech in Pennsylvania, he acknowledged the economic benefits of the policy, but said he wanted to implement it for other reasons.

I think it will be economically positive, Trump said. But I don't even do it for that reason. I do it because the absence of overtime tax is a very good thing.

The Trump campaign did not respond to questions about why the former president hoped to adopt the policy.

Eliminating overtime taxes is part of a package of tax-cutting economic proposals recently announced by the Trump campaign.

Trump's opponent in the current election, Vice President Kamala Harris, has proposed her own version of a policy that would end taxes on tips. Harris' proposal had some limitations, such as ensuring that white-collar workers like investment professionals and lawyers couldn't reclassify bonuses as tips to avoid income tax.

Both policies have received mixed reviews from economists and experts. Some said it would favor workers who earn a certain form of income over others, leading to a disjointed or even unfair tax code. They would also reduce government revenues without any clear plan to offset them elsewhere.

Harris' plans also come with an increase in the corporate tax rate, which would theoretically return tax revenues to previous levels. Trump also proposed cutting the corporate tax rate from 21% to 15%. A plan that economists estimate will cost an additional $200 billion over 10 years, according to the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget.
