Pakistani court denies bail to former PM Khan and his wife in corruption case

ISLAMABAD (AP) A Pakistani court on Monday rejected a bail application filed by jailed former Prime Minister Imran Khan and his wife in a corruption case, their lawyer said. It is another blow for the popular opposition leader, who has been in prison for more than a year after being convicted on several charges.

Khan has been involved in more than 150 cases since 2022, when he was ousted from power in a vote of no confidence in Parliament after several political allies abandoned him.

He accused the army and his archenemy, current Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, of ousting him following a US plot. Accusations they denied.

He faced new charges, including in the corruption case, in July after a court overturned the couple's convictions and seven-year sentences in a case questioning the legality of their 2018 marriage, thus paving the way for their release.

Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi are accused of allegedly hoarding and selling state gifts in violation of government rules while he was in power. Pakistan allows government officials to buy gifts received from foreign dignitaries, but they must declare their sales because it increases their income. Khan is accused of undervaluing these products

The couple's lawyer, Intizar Hussain Panjutha, denounced the court's decision. The bail application was heard at Adiala prison, where Khan and his wife are being held in separate cells.

October 2 is set for the couple's arraignment in the case.

On Monday, Khan's spokesperson Zulfiqar Bukhari claimed on water thrown on his mattress. These violations of human rights and the rights of prisoners must be reported and stopped, he wrote.

There was no immediate comment from authorities on his claims.

Recently, some prison officials were fired on accusations of violating prison rules to help Khan. It's unclear how exactly they helped him.
