PM Modi speaks to Netanyahu in Israel as Mideast crisis deepens – The Week
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday spoke over phone with his Israeli counterpart Benjamin Netanyahu as the security situation in the Middle East worsened.
In an article on X, Modi said he spoke to Netanyahu about recent developments in the region and stressed the need for de-escalation.
“I spoke to Prime Minister Netanyahu about recent developments in West Asia. Terrorism has no place in our world. It is crucial to prevent regional escalation and ensure the safe release of all hostages” , he declared.
Tensions escalated in the region after Israel launched airstrikes against Lebanon-based Hezbollah and killed several of its top leaders, including its leader Hassan Nasrallah.
Modi, however, did not mention any specific incident in his message, but maintained that India is committed to supporting efforts to quickly restore peace and stability.
Hezbollah has been attacking Israel since the latter launched its military operations in Gaza following the October 7 attack. The crisis worsened with Israel opening several war fronts and launching airstrikes against Hezbollah and the Houthis in Yemen.
On Monday, Netanyahu, in a televised speech, issued a warning to Iran, saying there was no place in the Middle East beyond Israel's reach.
Nasrallah's assassination also had repercussions in India, with protests in various states.
In Jammu and Kashmir, where parliamentary elections are underway, hundreds of people took to the streets of Srinagar and Budgam, prompting political leaders to condemn the Israeli action.
National Conference leader Omar Abdullah urged Modi to put pressure on Israel to end the bloodshed in Palestine and Lebanon. PDP leader Mehbooba Mufti called Netanyahu the biggest terrorist after Hitlar. The Mufti also criticized India's renewed ties with Israel, stressing that New Delhi had always supported Palestine.
