Fmr. President Trump visits Valdosta after Hurricane Helen, promises to help rebuild

VALDOSTA, Ga. (WALB) – Former President Donald Trump said he transported truckloads of supplies to the Valdosta area on a tour of storm damage this afternoon.

Most residents WALB spoke with said they believe former President Donald Trump's visit will help bring more awareness to the devastation here. At this point, people here are pleading for any form of help from state and local leaders.

Hurricane Helene is far from out of sight. Many neighbors are still reliving moments of the historic storm.

It was probably the first time in my life, I'm 51 years old, for at least a minute or two I was afraid for my life, said Bennie Calloway, a Valdosta resident.

Many neighbors fear it will take several months to return to some normalcy.

We're trying to make the best of it, but it's been a disaster. Some people are really suffering, said Valdosta resident Rena Barclay.

For students, this school year is now completely turned upside down. A prolonged power outage and storm damage delayed some schools until October. Fewer than 40 Valdosta State University students who live on campus have no choice but to transfer to an off-campus facility while other students have chosen to return home.

“I've lived here my whole life and this is the first hurricane that really hit where I was really scared,” said Morgan Barfield, a VSU student.

Former President Donald Trump says he is currently putting politics aside to focus on disaster relief.

We are here today to express our total solidarity with the people of Georgia and with all those suffering from the terrible consequences of Hurricane Helene. Hurricane Helen turned out to be a major hurricane, about the largest ever seen, Trump said.

As people turn to national and local resources, Trump says it will take Americans coming together to advance recovery efforts.

By working together, we can overcome and endure these challenges, Trump said. Well, let's rebuild Valdosta and all the other cities that were hit hard.

President Joe Biden is expected to visit areas affected by Hurricane Helene soon. Vice President Kamala Harris also announced she would cancel her campaign stops on Monday and travel to FEMA headquarters in Washington DC for a briefing as she prepares to also visit heavily affected areas.
