Former President Donald Trump spoke Monday at a furniture store in Hurricane Helene-ravaged Valdosta, Ga., where he said the day wasn't about politics — just about enjoying the opportunity to continue criticizing President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris. which he claimed was the wrong answer.

“As you know, our country is going through the final weeks of hard-fought national elections. But in a time like this, when a crisis hits, when our fellow citizens cry out in need, none of that matters. importance We are not “We all need to come together and solve this problem. We need a lot of help here,” Trump said of the hurricane-affected Georgia community.

But at the same time, Trump suggested Biden and Harris weren't doing enough in the wake of the hurricane, which hit several states including Georgia and North Carolina, two battlegrounds in the upcoming election .

“They're not responding at all,” he said, saying they failed to speak to Georgia GOP Gov. Brian Kemp even though Kemp said they had.

“Let me be clear: He’s lying,” Biden retorted during a late afternoon briefing in the Oval Office when reporters asked about Trump’s claim about the response. “I don't know why he does this, or why I'm so angry. I don't care what he says about me, I care what he communicates to people in need. He lets hear that we are not doing everything possible. We are doing it.

“So that's just not true. It's irresponsible,” Biden said.

The Trump campaign said it partnered with the humanitarian aid organization Samaritan's Purse to bring relief to Georgia. A campaign official said he brought a tanker truck and two trucks full of supplies to Valdosta.

During his remarks, the former president said: “We have a lot of trucks full of different items, from oil to water to all kinds of equipment that are going to help them. »

However, in a carefully prepared statement, the campaign later said it had “partnered” with Samaritan's Purse, suggesting that Trump had not brought in supplies independently, but had only partnered with the non-profit organization already present on site.

“President Trump has partnered with Samaritans Purse to provide truckloads of critical and much-needed resources to the people of Georgia, including fuel and construction materials,” said Karoline Leavitt, a spokeswoman for the Trump campaign.

The campaign did not respond to multiple questions asking to clarify what it meant by “in partnership.”

Earlier Monday, Biden said he had directed his team to “provide all available resources as quickly as possible” to affected communities to help them rescue, recover and begin rebuilding.

Then on Monday afternoon, Harris spoke at the Federal Emergency Management Agency headquarters in Washington, where she had gone for a briefing after canceling campaign events and flying home from Las Vegas.

“I have received regular briefings on the impact of Hurricane Helene, including from Administrator Criswell,” she told FEMA workers. “And over the last 24 hours, I have spoken with Governor Kemp of Georgia, Governor Cooper of North Carolina and many local officials.”

She said she would visit her when she was not disruptive.

“I let them know that we would do everything in our power to help communities respond and recover, and I let them know that I planned to be on the ground as soon as possible. But sooner rather than later possible without disrupting emergency response operations, as this must be the highest priority and first order of business,” she said.

Homeland Security Advisor Liz Sherwood Randall said Monday that 3,500 federal response agents are currently deployed and supporting response efforts in the region, with additional personnel expected to arrive in the coming days.

“Search and rescue efforts by state, local and federal partners continue, and nearly 600 additional personnel will arrive in the region in the coming days, bringing the total number of urban search and rescue personnel to more than 1,250,” she told reporters.

FEMA and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers are also preparing generators for deployment in states that request them.

Although communication remains a major challenge for the affected area, Sherwood-Randall said, “FEMA will install 30 Starlink receivers across western North Carolina to provide immediate connectivity to those who need it most. »

Biden, returning from the beach on Sunday, insisted his administration was doing everything possible to help affected communities.

Asked by ABC News whether the federal government could provide more resources, Biden said: “No, we gave it to them.”

“We have a significant amount set aside, even though they haven't asked for it yet,” Biden said Sunday.

“We are deploying food, water and generators, and working to restore state and local leaders, we will provide them with any assistance they need in the days and weeks to come,” he said. Harris said Sunday at a rally in Las Vegas.

On Monday, Biden said he called Hurricane Helen “not just a catastrophic storm, it's a historic storm,” and pledged to visit the affected area once he can do so without being “disruptive.” , hopefully later this week.

“I also want you to know that I am committed to traveling to the affected areas as quickly as possible. But I have been told that it would be disruptive if I did so now, we will not do so at the risk of hijacking or delay any means of response necessary to address this crisis,” Biden said Monday. “My first responsibility is to provide all necessary assistance to the affected areas.”

Asked if Trump's visit to Georgia on Monday would cause a disruption, Biden said, “I have no idea.”

White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said Monday that Biden was “being careful to avoid using the critical resources that are needed right now, on the road, on the ground that people need “, and added that “should be everyone's primary consideration.” right away.”

When asked if there were any requests for Trump to delay his visit, Jean-Pierre did not respond directly, repeating Biden's desire not to withdraw resources, but adding “he thinks that all world should adhere to this.”

Hurricane Helen's storm surge, wind damage and inland flooding caused diversions and casualties in Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia and Tennessee, flooding neighborhoods, stranding residents, demolishing homes and toppling trees. The storm killed at least 107 people and left dozens missing.
