In an effort to troll former President Donald Trump and his running mate, Sen. J.D. Vance, ahead of the first and only 2024 vice presidential debate, the Democratic National Committee on Monday night screened various phrases — including Vance previously calling Trump a “idiot” – on Trump Tower in New York.

The projections appeared just hours after Vance arrived at Trump Tower on Monday ahead of Tuesday night's vice presidential debate with Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz at the CBS Broadcast Center in Manhattan.

“Vance on Trump: 'What an idiot,'” one of the digital projections says, referencing an October 2016 tweet from Vance, in which he wrote, “God, what an idiot” about Trump – as part of a series of reviews of Vance. has since said he regrets it.

The DNC projections also take aim at the former president for saying he would no longer debate Vice President Kamala Harris. Trump said “it's just too late, the voting has already started,” but Democrats note he participated in the October debates in the last two election cycles.

“Trump is a chicken!” said another message projected on Trump Tower, following Democrats sponsoring billboards near a Trump rally in battleground Pennsylvania last week with the same sentiment.

Harris told supporters at a rally in Las Vegas Sunday night that the campaign would be cheering for “Coach Walz” on Tuesday. But even though this debate is the last of the 2024 cycle, she warned that “their debate should not be the last word.”

As Democrats continue to lean on Walz's background as a social studies teacher and high school football coach, another projection reads: “Go Coach Walz!”

Monday's latest post calls Trump Tower “Project 2025 HQ,” a line the DNC also displayed on Chicago's Trump International Hotel and Tower during the Democratic National Convention in August.

The former president sought to distance himself from the Heritage Foundation-overseen conservative plan for a second Trump term, calling it “Project 25” and saying he knew “nothing about it,” but Democrats continue to denounce it. link to Trump and Vance.

DNC spokesperson Abhi Rahman told CBS News on Monday that the screenings are intended to grab the Republican group's attention and remind Americans that Trump will not agree to debate again.

“As Vance takes the debate stage to try to make up for Trump's lackluster debate performance, these projections on New York's Trump Tower are a reminder that Trump and Vance are alone while Trump is afraid to return to that debate stage. debate and being held accountable by Vice President Harris for his failed record and dangerous agenda,” Rahman said in a statement.

David Schwartz, a lawyer in New York, told CBS News that it is illegal to project digital signs in New York for more than 60 seconds without a permit.

“The Department of Buildings and New York City code require a permit, even for digital signs and animated signs. We have a very comprehensive sign law that says you have to get a permit to put up a sign, but now, in the era of,” he said.

“It's not like anyone is going to go to jail for this, but it is punishable by a fine. And in this political season, maybe that's just the price of doing business.” , added Schwartz.

Rahman, a DNC spokesperson, said they were aware of the law and were following it because they would review individual messages that would not be displayed for more than 60 seconds.

CBS News will host the only scheduled vice presidential debate between Vance and Walz on Tuesday at 9 p.m. ET on CBS and CBS News 24/7. Download the free CBS News app for live coverage, post-debate analysis, comprehensive fact-checking and more.
