NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday reiterated India's opposition to terrorism and simultaneously urged his Israeli counterpart Benjamin Netanyahu to prevent regional escalation, saying New Delhi would support a rapid restoration of peace in West Asia.

Modi made the remarks during a conversation with Netanyahu focused on the latest developments in West Asia. The interaction came days after an Israeli airstrike in Lebanon killed Hassan Nasrallah, a senior Hezbollah leader, raising fears of an escalation of the conflict in Gaza.

I spoke to Prime Minister @netanyahu about recent developments in West Asia. Terrorism has no place in our world, Modi said in an article on X.

It is crucial to prevent regional escalation and ensure the safe release of all hostages. India is committed to supporting efforts to quickly restore peace and stability, he added, referring to the many Israelis who continue to be detained by Hamas after being kidnapped during the terrorist attacks on 7 October 2023.

Modi's call for restraint is significant in the context of remarks by several Israeli officials on a possible incursion of ground forces into Lebanon. Israel has also launched airstrikes against Iran-aligned groups in Syria and Yemen. Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei has vowed to avenge Nasrallah's killing, and experts say any attack from Tehran could intensify the conflict in West Asia.

India had initially expressed solidarity with Israel after the October 7 terrorist attacks, but later adopted a more nuanced stance given its growing strategic ties with several Arab states, including Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE). ).

The Indian side pushed for an immediate end to hostilities, release of hostages, resumption of humanitarian aid to Gaza and resumption of diplomacy and dialogue leading to a two-state solution.

Modi's conversation with Netanyahu took place just over a week after his meeting with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas on the sidelines of the Future Summit in New York on September 22. During the meeting, Modi expressed deep concern over the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and the deteriorating security situation in the region and reiterated India's support to the Palestinian people, including humanitarian assistance.

He reiterated India's time-tested principled stand on the Israeli-Palestinian issue and called for a ceasefire and a return to the path of dialogue. He also stressed that only a two-state solution would guarantee lasting peace and stability in the region.

Meanwhile, Netanyahu told the Iranians in a brief video message on Monday that nowhere in the Middle East was beyond Israel's reach. Speaking in English, he blamed the Iranian government for plunging the region deeper into war to the detriment of its own people. There is nowhere we will not go to protect our people and our country, he said.

He accused the Iranian government of bringing its people closer to the brink and said both sides will be at peace when Iran is finally free. He also called Nasrallah, killed Saturday in Beirut, a puppet of the Iranian regime.

Iran's Foreign Ministry said the country would not deploy forces to Lebanon or Gaza to confront Israel. There is no need to send additional or volunteer forces from the Islamic Republic of Iran, Foreign Ministry spokesman Nasser Kanani said, adding that Lebanon and fighters from the Palestinian territories have the capacity and the strength to defend oneself against aggression.

However, Kanani said Israel would not remain without reprimand and punishment for the crimes it committed against the Iranian people, military personnel and resistance forces.
