As Israel escalates violence in West Asia, PM Modi addresses counterpart Netanyahu
New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on September 30 that he spoke with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu about the situation in West Asia, where Israel, after a year of strikes on Gaza, began bombing Lebanon and the Yemen.
Modi wrote on X:>
I spoke to the Prime Minister [Netanyahu] on recent developments in West Asia. Terrorism has no place in our world. It is crucial to prevent regional escalation and ensure the safe release of all hostages. India is committed to supporting efforts to quickly restore peace and stability.
Israel is among the countries that consider Hezbollah, an armed group in Lebanon opposed to Israeli expansionism, and the Houthis, who operate from Yemen, as terrorists. Both groups are supporters of the Palestinian group Hamas, which attacked Israel last year in October in retaliation for Israel's relentless bombing of Gaza, killing thousands in what was described as a genocide.>
Modi emphasized that terrorism has no place in our world. India has never officially designated any of the Hamas, Hezbollah or Houthi groups as terrorists.
Modi also stressed that it is crucial to prevent regional escalation and called for the safe release of all hostages. Hamas and Israel have respectively held Israelis and Palestinians hostage.
Modi also said India was committed to supporting efforts to restore peace. Earlier in September, India abstained of a widely supported UN General Assembly resolution calling for an end to the Israeli occupation of Gaza and the West Bank within a year.>
