Boris Johnson claims in new memoir that Queen Elizabeth II suffered from bone cancer
The late Queen Elizabeth II suffered from bone cancer for more than a year before her death in 2022 at the age of 96, according to a claim made by former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson in his upcoming memoir.
Johnson, who met the Queen at Balmoral Castle just days before her death on September 8, 2022, writes in his memoir, titled “Unleashed”, about the Queen's appearance during their last meeting.
“She appeared pale and more stooped, and she had dark bruises on her hands and wrists, probably from drips or injections,” Johnson writes, adding: “She had known all summer that she was leaving, but she was determined to hang on and do this as her final duty.
Of her alleged bone cancer diagnosis, Johnson writes: “I had known for a year or more that she suffered from a form of bone cancer, and her doctors feared that at any moment she might experience a precipitous decline. . »
Buckingham Palace never said the late Queen suffered from bone cancer. The palace also declined to comment to ABC News about Johnson's new book.
The cause of death on the Queen's death certificate is old age.
Johnson writes that although the Queen appeared to have physical problems when they last met on September 6, 2022, she was mentally strong.
“But her spirit… was completely intact… she still wore that big white smile in her sudden beauty that uplifts the spirits,” he wrote.
Elizabeth's last public photo shows her meeting Liz Truss, then British Prime Minister-elect, at Balmoral Castle after Johnson resigned as Prime Minister. It was the first time at the queen's house 70 years of reign that the transfer of power ceremony took place at Balmoral rather than Buckingham Palace in London.
During the Queen's reign, the palace always fiercely guarded its medical privacy.
“What former Prime Minister Boris Johnson did here was share a private piece of information that he had received from the late Queen,” ITV News royal editor Chris Ship told ABC News. “She clearly didn’t want to share her condition.”
In contrast, Elizabeth's eldest son, King Charles III, publicly announced his cancer diagnosis.
The palace announced on February 5 that Charles had been diagnosed with cancer following treatment for benign prostate enlargement. He has not publicly revealed what type of cancer Charles was diagnosed with, or what type of treatment he is undergoing.
The king's daughter-in-law, Princess Kate, also announced her own cancer diagnosis this year, sharing publicly in March that she had been diagnosed with cancer.
She has not publicly revealed what type of cancer she was dealing with, nor the exact details of her treatment, beyond the fact that she underwent “preventative chemotherapy.”
“There has been a generational change [with] “The current royal shares his cancer diagnosis, and Kate told us she's undergoing chemotherapy treatment,” Ship said. “It’s up to each individual to decide what they want to share with members of the public, and the late Queen was someone who wanted to keep her medical condition as private as possible.”
