Donald Trump opts out of '60 Minutes' interview, CBS News reports

Donald Trump withdrew from a planned interview with 60 Minutes and its correspondent, Scott Pelley, the channel announced Tuesday.

The interview was scheduled to take place Monday, as part of a prime-time election special, during which the show would interview both major party candidates.

“After initially accepting Scott Pelley's interview request from 60 Minutes, former President Trump's campaign decided not to participate,” a spokesperson for the show said.

Vice President Kamala Harris has agreed to participate in the special and will speak with correspondent Bill Whitaker.

The special will air at 8 p.m. ET, following a half-century tradition in which the show invited contestants to appear on the show.

“Our election special will air the Harris interview on Monday as scheduled. Our initial invitation to former President Donald Trump to be interviewed on the 60 Minutes booth,” the 60 Minutes spokesperson said.

Steven Cheung, a spokesperson for the Trump campaign, wrote on X: “Fake News. 60 Minutes requested an interview, even after he was caught lying about Hunter Biden's laptop in 2020. There were some early discussions, but nothing was ever scheduled or locked in.”

He added: “They also insisted on fact-checking live, which is unprecedented. »

According to CBS News, campaign spokespeople for Trump, and then Harris, accepted interview requests. The agreement provided that each candidate would receive two segments of the show, of equal length. A campaign spokesperson later informed the show that Trump would not appear for an interview.

Harris' segment will also include footage of her on the campaign trail this week, and her running mate, Tim Walz, is also expected to participate in the interview.

In 2020, while still president, Trump participated in a controversial 60 Minutes election interview with Lesley Stahl, but he cut the session short. The Trump White House released a video version of the interview ahead of broadcast.

Harris accepted CNN's proposal to hold a second presidential debate with Trump on October 23. Trump, however, refused, telling a rally last month that it was “too late” in the election cycle to pursue another showdown.
