Boris Johnson claims in memoir that Queen Elizabeth II suffered from bone cancer
By Lauren Said-Moorhouse and Max Foster, CNN
London (CNN) — Former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson controversially violated royal protocol and claimed in his upcoming memoir that Queen Elizabeth II suffered from bone cancer before his death.
In the book that hits the shelves on October 10 and was published this week in the Daily Mail Journal – for which Johnson also writes – he recalled the monarch's final days at Balmoral, Scotland.
Johnson officially resigned just two days before Elizabeth II's death in September 2022, and in the years since, there has been fierce speculation about exactly how she died.
I had known for a year or more that she suffered from a form of bone cancer, and her doctors feared that at any moment she could experience a precipitous decline, he writes in the excerpt.
Johnson's account is the first public indication from a former senior government official of the cause of Queen's death. It's listed as old age on his death certificate.
Johnson is not the first prime minister to recall his life, tenure and interactions with the late Queen in an autobiography. Former British leaders Tony Blair, Gordon Brown and David Cameron all did this, but only in general terms and without the same level of striking detail as Johnson.
Buckingham Palace has a policy of not commenting on published books about the royal family and, as such, has neither confirmed nor denied Johnson's claims.
Johnson, who served as prime minister between 2019 and 2022, remembers going to the royal residence at Balmoral for the customary outgoing audience and resignation. Upon his arrival, he recalled being greeted by Queens' private secretary, Edward Young, who suggested that his condition had deteriorated significantly over the summer.
Thinking back to the last time they sat together in the Queens living room, Johnson said he understood Young's warning.
She appeared pale and more stooped, and she had dark bruises on her hands and wrists, likely from drips or injections, he wrote.
But her mind, as Edward had also said, was completely unimpaired by her illness, and from time to time during our conversation she still showed that great white smile in her sudden beauty which put one in a good mood. .
Johnson described the Prime Minister's weekly audiences with the monarch as a privilege and a balm.
She radiated such an ethic of service, patience and leadership that one truly felt as if, if necessary, one would die for her, he continued. This may seem ridiculous to some people (and completely obvious to many others), but this loyalty, as primitive as it may seem, is still at the heart of our system.
You need someone kind and wise, and above politics, to embody what is good in our country. She did this job brilliantly.
The late queen never shared private medical details with the public. Royal household aides still maintain that family members have the same right to medical privacy as anyone else.
King Charles III and Catherine, Princess of Wales, bucked the trend and were more open about their health. The two shared details about their own cancer diagnoses and recoveries.
However, in both cases, they have chosen not to disclose the specific form of cancer they are battling. When pressed, aides said they wanted to share their experiences to raise awareness about the disease.
