Trump withdraws from prime-time 60 Minutes interview, CBS says

Former President Donald Trump has pulled out of a scheduled interview with 60 Minutes, the most-watched news magazine in the United States, CBS News announced Tuesday evening.

CBS revealed Trump's change of plans hours before the network scheduled a vice presidential debate between Trump's running mate, Ohio Sen. JD Vance, and Kamala Harris's running mate, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz.

For more than half a century, 60 Minutes has invited Democrats and Republicans to appear on our shows as Americans go to the polls, the network said in a statement. This year, the Harris and Trump campaigns agreed to sit down with 60 Minutes.

Trump had committed to giving the interview first, followed by Harris, through campaign spokespeople, CBS said. Veteran CBS anchor and correspondent Scott Pelley was lined up to interview Trump.

After initially agreeing to 60 Minutes' request for an interview with Scott Pelley, the former Trump campaign chairman decided not to participate, CBS said.

The network learned of it earlier Tuesday, throwing a wrench into its programming plans, since the Harris and Trump interviews were supposed to air on a special Monday night edition of 60 Minutes next week.

With no additional debates planned between Trump and Harris, the traditional 60 Minutes session was one of the last moments before the November election when voters could see both candidates on a major television program.

CBS said the prime-time special would still continue with an interview with Harris. Correspondent Bill Whitaker is expected to follow Harris on the campaign trail and interview her later this week.

Our initial invitation to former President Donald Trump to be interviewed on the 60 Minutes booth, the network said.

In a statement, the Trump campaign denied agreeing to the interview.

Contrary to the Trump camps' claim that no interviews were planned, two sources familiar with the matter said Pelley was expected to sit down with Trump at his Mar-a-Lago club on Thursday and attend the Trump rally in Butler, Pa., on Saturday.

Asked by CNN if there was still a chance Trump could participate in the interview, Cheung replied: “Now that they've lied about the interaction, they're just screwed.”

The Harris campaign immediately criticized Trump for the decision.

In October 2020, Trump spoke with 60 Minutes correspondent Lesley Stahl and abruptly ended the interview when he apparently objected to Stahl's questions.

The CBS news magazine is typically a highly sought-after destination for presidential candidates because of its large audience.
