President Alexander Stubb met his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan in Ankara on Tuesday and discussed various bilateral and international issues, including the situation in the Middle East.

They stressed the urgent need for a ceasefire in the region to avoid further escalation.

“Important discussions with President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Gaza and Lebanon, Ukraine and bilateral relations, among others. In the Middle East, a ceasefire is urgently needed to avoid further escalation,” Stubb wrote in a post on his social media platform X after the meeting.

This year marks the 100th anniversary of the Treaty of Friendship between Finland and Turkey.

“As NATO allies, our relationship is better than ever,” Stubb said.

The Turkish president, in a message published on social networks, wrote that he shared his hope that Finland would continue to increase its support for Turkey's accession process to the European Union, in addition to the situation in Middle East.

“During our meetings, in addition to our bilateral relations, we also discussed current issues, including the genocide in Gaza, the Middle East conflict which has spilled over into Lebanon, and relations between Turkey and the European Union,” Erdogan wrote in his X.

He also declared that it was the primary duty of all States and international organizations to oppose Israel's unjust and illegal occupation and annexation operation.

The Turkish president also reiterated his call to countries that have not yet recognized Palestine as a state, to recognize the State of Palestine.

“We sincerely believe that our bilateral relations with Finland and our cooperation within NATO will continue to strengthen on solid foundations,” added the Turkish president.

Earlier, Stubb arrived in Ankara for an official visit and spoke at the Martti Ahtisaari Legacy Seminar, marking the 100th anniversary of the Finland-Turkey Friendship Treaty.

Former President Sauli Niinistö's last working visit to Türkiye was in March 2023.
