Donald Trump opts out of 60 Minutes interview, network says

Former President Donald Trump has withdrawn from a scheduled interview with CBS News 60 Minutes, the network announced in a statement Tuesday.

The Republican presidential candidate previously accepted an invitation to appear on the long-running news magazine's election special, which was scheduled to air Monday, Oct. 7, the release said.

After initially agreeing to 60 Minutes' request for an interview with Scott Pelley, the former Trump campaign chairman decided not to participate, the network said. Pelley will speak this Monday evening.

The announcement came hours before the network aired the vice presidential debate between Ohio Sen. JD Vance and Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz.

Trump campaign spokesman Steven Cheung disputed those claims in an article on X, insisting that the network requested an interview but nothing was ever scheduled or locked down. Cheung also said that 60 Minutes insisted on fact-checking live, which is unprecedented.

Later, in another article, Cheung lashed out against the program, calling it a relic of the past, unable to keep pace with the times and the changing media environment, instead turning into propaganda liberal and biased.

The campaign referred The Daily Beast to Cheung's post when contacted for comment. The program did not immediately respond to a request for comment from The Daily Beast on Cheung's fact-check.

Speaking at a news conference in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, on Tuesday afternoon, Trump said: “I would love to do 60 Minutes, I do everything. The former president said he expects an apology from the program for rejecting coverage of the Hunter Biden laptop affair during the last election cycle.

“They came to me and wanted me to do an interview, but first I want to get an apology because the last time I did an interview with them, if you remember, they challenged me on the computer,” Trump said. They said the laptop from hell came from Russia. And I said, it wasn't from Russia, it was from Hunter. And I never got an apology, so I'm just kind of waiting.

The program's interview with Democratic vice president candidate Kamala Harris will air Monday as scheduled, the network said. 60 Minutes said its invitation to the Republican candidate still stood.

Trump previously sat down for an interview with the program before the 2020 presidential election, where he grew angry at questions asked by host Lesley Stahl before abruptly bowing out.
