Jokowi orders immediate evacuation of Indonesians from Lebanon
TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – President Joko”Jokowi“Widodo instructed Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi to prioritize the evacuation of Indonesian citizens residing in Lebanonfollowing the intensification of Israeli attacks in the region.
“I have asked the Minister of Foreign Affairs to take immediate measures to ensure the safety and protection of our citizens and accelerate their evacuation,” he said in a statement at the Kefamenanu Regional General Hospital, in East Timor, in Nusa Tenggara Timor, Wednesday October 1st. 2, 2024.
Since Monday, September 30, 2024, Israel's relentless attacks in eastern, southern Lebanon, and southern Beirut have tragically claimed hundreds of lives and forced mass displacement.
UN refugee chief Filippo Grandi reported that more than 200,000 people have been displaced in Lebanon, while more than 50,000 have fled to neighboring Syria.
Judha Nugraha, Director of Indonesian Citizen Protection at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, revealed that the Indonesian Embassy in Beirut raised the alert level to 1 for southern Lebanon in October 2023, coinciding with the outbreak of war in Gaza. Subsequently, on August 4, 2024, the alert level was raised to 1 for the whole of Lebanon.
As part of its emergency plan, the ministry and the embassy had prepared evacuation procedures for Indonesian citizens. Since the implementation of Alert Level 1, the embassy has successfully evacuated 25 Indonesian citizens, who have now returned safely to Indonesia.
“However, the majority of other Indonesian citizens chose to stay in Lebanon for various personal reasons,” Judha said. Tempo on Tuesday October 1, 2024.
Currently, 159 registered Indonesian citizens reside in Lebanon. Most of them are Indonesian citizens married to Lebanese nationals or Indonesian students.
Judha stressed that the ministry and the embassy reiterated their advice to Indonesian citizens to exercise increased vigilance, avoid high-risk areas, limit their movements to essential purposes only, and promptly adhere to the evacuation procedures outlined by the Indonesian Embassy in Beirut.
