CHP divided over Erdoan's candidacy for Parliament

Lawmakers from the main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP) were divided on October 1 over how to greet President Recep Tayyip Erdoan before his speech in Parliament.
Erdoan's speech marks the return of parliament after a two-month legislative break.
On the instructions of CHP leader Zgr Zel, most of the party's deputies stood up when Erdoan entered the general assembly hall, although they did not applaud.
However, a group including Engin Altay, Okan Konuralp, Uur Bayraktutan and Sibel Suimez remained seated.
CHP sources told the Hrriyet daily that 16 of the party's 127 deputies chose to stay behind the scenes during the session, avoiding any involvement in the move.
zel then commented on the mixed responses from his party members, stating that he “understood” their different attitudes.
The incident comes amid the CHP's broader “normalization” efforts with Erdoan's ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP).
Zel and Erdoan met in the capital Ankara on May 2, the first direct engagement between the AKP and CHP leaders since 2016. Erdoan then visited Zel again on June 11, paving the way for continued dialogue between the different ministers and their CHP counterparts.
Erdoan has previously described the recent negotiations as part of a “softening” process.
During the session, Y (Good) Party MPs defended Erdoan, while those from the People's Equality and Democracy Party (DEM Party) remained seated, both continuing their previous positions.
In another moment, Zel engaged in a brief conversation with Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) leader Devlet Baheli, despite a heated verbal exchange earlier in the day.
At the end of the session, Baheli went to shake hands with DEM party co-chair Tuncer Bakrhan.
