Jokowi hopes border crossings will boost economic growth in border regions
TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – President Joko Widodo, or Jokowihopes that the recently inaugurated cross-border posts (PLBN) in several regions of Indonesia will stimulate the growth of new economic centers, especially for ordinary citizens.
One example of such growth is the Motaain market north of Bikomi, a district in East Nusa Tenggara that directly borders Oecusse, an enclave of East Timor.
“People from Timor-Leste also shop at the (Motaain) market. There are people,” Jokowi said in North Central Timor Regency, NTT, Wednesday, October 2, 2024.
“These are the new economic centers that we are waiting for. But economic centers for the people, not for the elites.”
Cross-border postsJokowi said, also represent Indonesia's progress. Concerning the availability of water in the border regions, the Head of State indicated that the Ministry of Public Works and Housing had distributed numerous water pumps.
“There are dams and many retention basins. We have built 5,500 retention basins over the past 10 years. Water pumps are also available at various designated locations,” he said.
Before heading to Kefamenanu Regional Hospital, Jokowi inaugurated seven border crossings in various border regions in Indonesia this morning. Jokowi carried out the inauguration at PLBN Napan, in the north-central regency of Timor.
The seven PLBNs completed between 2019 and 2024 include PLBN Serasan in Natuna Regency, Riau Islands; the PLBN Jagoi Babang in Bengkayang Regency, West Kalimantan Province; the PLBN Mosquito Sei in Nunukan Regency, North Kalimantan Province; Napan PLBN in North Central Timor Regency, NTT Province; Yetetkun PLBN in Boven Digoel Regency, South Papua Province; Labang PLBN in Nunukan Regency, North Kalimantan Province; and Long Nawang PLBN in Malinau Regency, North Kalimantan Province.
The construction of these cross-border posts was based on Presidential Instruction (Inpres) No. 1 of 2019, which mandated the accelerated development of 11 integrated PLBNs and their supporting infrastructure in the border areas. Construction was supervised by the Regional Settlement Infrastructure Center (BPPW) in each province with a border region.
