Jokowi inaugurates 7 cross-border posts as defense buffer zones
TEMPO.CO, NTT – President Joko”Jokowi” Widodo inaugurated seven border crossings (PLBN) located in various border regions of Indonesia. The inauguration ceremony was held at the Napan PLBN in North Central Timor Regency, East Nusa Tenggara, the Wednesday October 2, 2024.
He emphasized that the PLBN serves as a gateway to Indonesia and represents the country's image to the world. He emphasized that PLBNs also function as symbols of the nation's progress.
“This is our effort for equitable development across the borders, extending to our borders. They also serve as buffer zones for the defense of our nation, Indonesia,” the President said in his speech.
The seven PLBNs completed between 2019 and 2024 include PLBN Serasan in Natuna Regency, Riau Islands; the PLBN Jagoi Babang in Bengkayang Regency, West Kalimantan Province; the PLBN Mosquito Sei in Nunukan Regency, North Kalimantan Province; Napan PLBN in North Central Timor Regency, NTT Province; Yetetkun PLBN in Boven Digoel Regency, South Papua Province; Labang PLBN in Nunukan Regency, North Kalimantan Province; and Long Nawang PLBN in Malinau Regency, North Kalimantan Province.
The construction of these PLBNs was guided by Presidential Instruction (Inpres) No. 1 of 2019, which mandated the accelerated development of 11 integrated PLBNs and their supporting infrastructure in border areas. Construction was supervised by the Regional Settlement Infrastructure Center (BPPW) in each province with a border region.
From 2015 to 2024, the government created a total of 15 border crossings. Seven PLBNs were built during the 2015-2019 period, while another eight were built between 2020 and 2024. In addition to the seven inaugurated today, the Sota PLBN in Merauke Regency, South Papua is operational since its inauguration by the president in October. 2021.
Jokowi revealed that the combined construction cost of the seven PLBNs inaugurated today amounts to Rp1.3 trillion. He expressed hope that these integrated PLBNs would improve services for Indonesian citizens crossing the border and strengthen security in border areas.
“[These PLBNs] should also spur the growth of new economic centers along the border and foster a greater sense of patriotism and pride within our border communities,” he concluded.
