JD Vance Again Refuses to Say Donald Trump Lost the 2020 Presidential Election

AUBURN HILLS, Mich. (AP) Republican vice presidential nominee JD Vance again refused Wednesday to say who he thinks won the 2020 presidential election, which has been the subject of persistent false claims from his running mate, Donald Trump.

Vance, speaking in Michigan a day after debating Democratic vice presidential candidate Tim Walz, was asked about an exchange during Tuesday night's showdown when he refused to acknowledge that Joe Biden had won the presidential race four years ago.

Well, here's the simple reason: The media is obsessed with talking about the election from four years ago, Vance said. I'm focused on the election in 33 days because I want to unseat Kamala Harris and return to common-sense economic policies.

Vance then spoke about the need for secure elections and said he believes the 2024 election will be the safest and most secure election.

Trump's denial of his defeat in the 2020 election has been the driving force behind much of his campaign and embracing it has been a key test for those hoping to have his support. His efforts to overturn his loss led to federal criminal charges, to which he pleaded not guilty, and a rift with his former running mate, former Vice President Mike Pence.

Trump pressured Pence to overturn Biden's election victory while he presided over the results certification ceremony on January 6, 2021. Pence refused and when rioters stormed the Capitol, some chanted that they wanted to hang Mike Pence.

On the debate stage Tuesday night, Walz addressed the pressure campaign against Pence, emphasizing why Vance was on stage instead of Walz.

Walz also asked Vance if Trump won the election.

I'm focused on the future, Vance replied.
