“We have never avoided communication, dialogue or negotiation
The President of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), Ersin Tatar, has made key remarks regarding the invitation of UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to talks in New York. “We have never avoided communication, dialogue or negotiations,” Tatar said, responding to speculation surrounding his visit.
During a meeting with leaders of political parties represented in the TRNC Parliament, Tatar provided details of his talks in New York. He also announced upcoming meetings with People's Party chief Kudret Zersay and leader of the Socialist Democracy Party smart hands.
On the sidelines of the 79th UN General Assembly, Tatar met with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoan, Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan and other officials, including the TRNC Foreign Minister. Tahsin Erturulolu. Tatar highlighted Erdoan's speech at the General Assembly, where he reiterated the need to recognize the sovereign equality of the TRNC and called for the development of economic, diplomatic and political relations with the TRNC.
“Federation is no longer an option”
Tatar pointed out that Turkish President Erdoan also stressed that the possibility of a federal solution for Cyprus was no longer on the table, citing the failure of past negotiations, notably those in Crans-Montana in 2017. He reiterated that future negotiations must be based on a two-state solution.
Reflecting on his tenure, Tatar noted that the TRNC's policy of sovereign equality, which he presented at the UN 5+1 talks in Geneva in 2021, is non-negotiable. He also highlighted the historical context of the situation, recalling that the decisions of the UN Security Council in 1964 led to the exclusion of Turkish Cypriots from the state apparatus.
Dialogue and cooperation
Tatar reiterated his commitment to dialogue, stating that despite the lack of progress due to non-compliance with preconditions, informal talks and negotiations continued. He also expressed his willingness to cooperate with Greek Cypriot leader Nikos Christodoulides on issues such as energy, water and economic projects that would benefit both communities.
In his closing speech, Tatar stressed that the TRNC, supported by Turkey, would continue its strengthening and development efforts despite international embargoes. “We will stay on the right track, in cooperation with Turkey, and continue to take steps to strengthen the TRNC,” he said.
