Bilawal Bhutto hints at pardoning Imran Khan if found guilty by military court

Pakistan People's Party Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari said on Wednesday his party could pardon jailed former Prime Minister Imran Khan if he is found guilty by a military court.

Defense Minister Khawaja Asif and other senior officials had said last month that the 71-year-old Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder could face a military trial for allegedly instigating his supporters to attack military installations after his employees went on a rampage following his arrest on May 9, 2023.

Speaking to reporters here, Bilawal, 36, was asked about his position regarding Khan's military trial and he responded with measured words.

“We must first evaluate the evidence. After all, we have the power to grant a presidential pardon,” he said while asserting that his party was against the death penalty.

His father Asif Ali Zardari, as outgoing president, has the power to grant pardons to convicts who have exhausted their right to appeal against their convictions.

The former foreign minister had his father's pardon power in mind when discussing the presidential pardon, although it is too early to speculate about Khan's trial by the military and his conviction .

Bilawal also spoke about the constitutional amendments. Asked about the proposed amendments and their deadline of October 25, he said: “If the amendments are made before October 25, the matter can be resolved peacefully. Although this can be done later, it can lead to confrontational situations. »

He further affirmed that his party would not abandon the file concerning the Constitutional Court, pledging to see it through to its conclusion.

“We have already faced significant delays, our demands date back to 2006 and are part of our manifesto,” he added.

He mentioned that the President of the Constitutional Court would serve a three-year term and expressed his opposition to the establishment of military courts, emphasizing that the justification of the Federal Constitutional Court lies in the historical precedents of the Supreme Court.

Last month, a Pakistani high court ruled on a petition to hold a military trial against Khan after being told no decision had been made by the federal government.

The former cricketer-turned-politician had filed a petition in the Islamabad High Court against the transfer of his trial to the military authorities.
