The judge presiding over former President Donald Trump's trial on Jan. 6 unsealed a new court filing revealing more details about Trump's charges of trying to overturn the 2020 election. Prosecutors say they have enough evidence evidence to convict him, even after the Supreme Court ruled this summer that presidents enjoy broad immunity for official acts while in office, but not for unofficial acts as a candidate or private citizen.

. Drew Angerer/Getty Images The filing reveals that former Vice President Mike Pence took detailed notes on meetings with Trump and outside advisers, NPR's Carrie Johnson tells Up First. Prosecutors say Trump himself tweeted an attack on Pence from the White House on Jan. 6 as rioters stormed the Capitol. The Trump campaign alleges that filing the court filing is an attempt to interfere in the November election and favor Vice President Harris. If Trump is re-elected, he is likely to ask new Justice Department officials to dismiss the case.

The Israeli army said yesterday that eight of its soldiers were killed during the ground invasion of southern Lebanon. The limited incursion is part of Israel's campaign against the Iranian-backed Hezbollah militant group. Last night, Israel struck another building in central Beirut. Lebanese health authorities say nearly 1,400 people have been killed in less than a month.

Israel has ordered the evacuation of around 50 villages in Lebanon, according to NPR's Eyder Peralta. Evacuation orders almost reach the center of the country. “The fear is that this could turn into a protracted war that could engulf all of Lebanon,” Peralta adds. Hezbollah gave journalists a tour of the damage in Dahieh, the neighborhood where an explosion killed Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah. “When you approach the scene of an explosion, you see all these fragments of life scattered in the middle of the streets,” explains Peralta. “It feels like almost everyone in this neighborhood is gone.”

Jury deliberations are set to begin today in the high-profile police brutality case linked to the death of Tire Nichols. Police video shows officers beating Nichols, a Black man they arrested during a traffic stop in 2023. He died three days later. The three fired detectives Justin Smith, Tadarrius Bean and Demetrius Haley are charged with several crimes, including depriving Nichols of his civil rights through excessive use of force, conspiracy to cover up the attack and obstruct justice, etc. .

NPR's Debbie Elliott reports that two of the officers pleaded guilty and testified against the others during the trial. Federal prosecutor Kathryn Gilbert urged jurors to trust their eyes as they watch footage showing officers attacking Nichols and apparently bragging about being beaten as he gasped for his life. Defense attorneys say it was a high-risk traffic stop and that their clients acted reasonably after Nichols ran a red light and failed to stop for police. Deep dive

When fentanyl began to spread through the U.S. illicit drug market, most experts thought it was impossible to stop. Some of the world's most sophisticated and ruthless criminal gangs operate the supply chain that fuels demand for this deadly synthetic drug. Over the past six months, Dan Ciccarone, a physician and illicit drug researcher at the University of California, San Francisco, has heard from experts who have noticed a decrease in overdoses and a significant decrease in the presence of fentanyl. This mirrors what the Ciccarones team has observed in areas where illicit fentanyl has been circulating for years.

Drug gangs appear to be adulterating or weakening the potency of the fentanyl being sold. They often use an industrial chemical called BTMPS to dilute it. Some drug policy experts believe the changing supply of fentanyl is a factor in the sudden decline in fentanyl-related deaths nationwide. It fell about 10% last year, according to the CDC. The crackdown on Mexican drug cartels that smuggle the drug into the United States could also impact the supply chain.
