Imran Khan's party says more than 700 supporters arrested in Pakistan's Punjab province ahead of Islamabad protests

LAHORE: More than 700 supporters of jailed former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan were arrested in different parts of Punjab province on Thursday, a day before a major showdown in Islamabad by his Independence Judiciary Liberation Party of the founder of the party and against rising inflation.

He said the Punjab Police had arrested more than 700 of its employees and officers in different districts, including Bahawalpur, Faisalabad, Mianwali and Jhangh, following its announcement to hold protests on Friday demanding independence of the judiciary, the release of party founder Imran Khan and against rising inflation.

The Punjab provincial government had adopted similar measures to prevent the PTI Jalsa from participating in the electricity show in Lahore last month.

Khan, 71, has been in prison since his arrest on August 5, 2023. Facing dozens of cases, he was found guilty in a few of them.

His party staged protests demanding his release and saying the government must respect the constitution and the independence of the judiciary.

PTI Central Information Secretary Sheikh Waqas Akram said the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N)-led government has cordoned off the red zone in Islamabad and is taking similar measures in other cities to prevent PTI workers from organizing protests and public meetings.

The PTI's call for protests panicked the government, which is why it closed the cities, he said.

Punjab Police deployed large contingents of policemen and set up containers at entry and exit points of all cities to stop the movement of protesters, he said. The selected districts were made into no-go zones for Punjab residents and those inside the towns were not allowed to step out.

The Punjab provincial government also imposed Section 144 in Lahore on Thursday banning all kinds of assemblies, rallies, rallies and political demonstrations.

On Wednesday, despite restrictions, party activists, including women, took to the streets, managed to overcome obstacles and survived tear gas shelling to hold rallies in different cities, PTI reported.

Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, daughter of Khan's main rival Nawaz Sharif, said political activity was allowed in the province but not terrorism by the PTI. We will deal with these elements with iron fists, she said.

Khan's party organized three major political events, including a rally in Islamabad and Lahore, and a demonstration in Rawalpindi. The party had called for protests on Wednesday in Mianwali, Bahawalpur and Faisalabad, which would be followed by a power show at D-Chowk in Islamabad on Friday.
