PM Modi welcomes cabinet decision to declare Marathi, Pali, Prakrit, Assamese and Bengali as classical languages

New Delhi [India]October 3 (ANI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday welcomed the Union Cabinet's decision to confer classical language status to Marathi, Pali, Prakrit, Assamese and Bengali languages.
In an article on X, PM Modi specifically praised languages and their rich contributions.
He said, “Marathi is the pride of India. Congratulations on this phenomenal language achieving the status of a classical language. This honor recognizes the rich cultural contribution of Marathi in the history of our nation. Marathi has always been a cornerstone of Indian heritage I am sure with the status of a classical language, many more people will be motivated to learn it.”
Speaking on the Bengali language, the Prime Minister said that Bengali literature has inspired countless people for years.
“I am very happy that the great Bengali language has achieved the status of a classical language, especially at the auspicious time of Durga Puja. Bengali literature has inspired countless people for years. I congratulate all Bengali speakers around the world whole for this,” he said on X.
In another tweet, Prime Minister Modi said that Assamese language will become more popular in the coming times.
“I am extremely happy that Assamese will now be given the status of a classical language after this was approved by the Union Cabinet. Assamese culture has flourished for centuries and has given us a rich literary tradition. May this language continue to become even more popular in the times to come, my congratulations,” he added.
He added that Pali and Prakrit are the languages of spirituality, wisdom and philosophy.
“They are languages of spirituality, wisdom and philosophy. They are also known for their literary traditions. Their recognition as classical languages honors their timeless influence on Indian thought, culture and history. I am convinced that 'After the Cabinet's decision to recognize them as classical languages, more people will be motivated to discover them. The Prime Minister further emphasized that the government cherishes and celebrates India's rich history and culture.
“We have also been steadfast in our commitment to popularize regional languages. I am extremely happy that the Cabinet has decided that Assamese, Bengali, Marathi, Pali and Prakrit will be conferred the status of classical languages! The Union Cabinet approved granting classical language status to Marathi, Pali, Prakrit, Assamese and Bengali languages.
Addressing the cabinet press briefing, Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said, “Now we had Tamil, Sanskrit, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam and Odia which were the classical languages notified… The government is taking many measures to conserve and promote classical languages and to preserve the rich heritage of these languages…”
A Linguistic Expert Committee (LEC) was constituted by the Ministry of Culture under the leadership of Sahitya Akademi in November 2004 to examine the languages proposed for classical language status.
The Indian government conferred classical language status on Tamil in 2004, Sanskrit in 2005, Telugu in 2008, Kannada in 2008, Malayalam in 2013 and Odia in 2014. (ANI)
