I see it every time I close my eyes, says widow of man killed at Trump rally

The wife of a former volunteer fire chief killed in July's assassination attempt on Donald Trump in Butler, Pennsylvania, told the BBC she was furious over security failures that led her husband to being killed by a gunman on the roof.

Corey Comperatore was shot dead after diving on family members to protect them as 20-year-old Thomas Crooks opened fire on the former president.

His wife, Helen, said she couldn't stop thinking about the day's events in her mind.

“I see it every time I close my eyes, and I probably will for a long time,” she said.

“I'm angry because there were a lot of mistakes that day, and that wasn't necessary,” she added.

Helen Comperatore spoke exclusively to the BBC just days before Trump returned to Butler and the site of the shooting.

The home she shared with Corey in Sarver is less than 20 miles from the site of Butler's rally and close enough to the volunteer fire station where he worked for decades that when its sirens sound, they can be easily heard.

Trump will hold a rally Saturday on the same field where he was shot in the ear, before defiantly raising his fist and mouthing Fight!, in what has become a defining image of his campaign.

Several members of the Comperatore family will be Trump's guests at this weekend's rally, including Helen.

Corey Comperatore, 50, was killed in the July shooting and two other people suffered life-changing injuries: David Dutch, 57, and James Copenhaver, 74.

An internal Secret Service review has since identified a litany of security failures that day, including poor planning and a breakdown in communication.

Corey, who was an ardent supporter of the current Republican presidential candidate, was excited about the July rally, his wife said.

“He just loved the way [Trump] got things done, and that he was not a politician and did not talk like one.

She said they think Trump understands the lives of people like them, in places like Butler, a working-class community just north of Pittsburgh.

At the rally, the family happened to find themselves in the stands between Trump and the shooter.

They had taken the time to eat ahead of time and missed the opening for seating – much to Corey's disappointment. Then a man arrived and offered them a place in the stands.

About six minutes into Trump's speech, Crooks fired eight shots from a rooftop just outside the perimeter of the rally, one hitting Trump's right ear and one striking and killing Corey as he sheltered his family.

In the months before her husband's death, the couple spent every weekend on their boat.

“We loved our time together,” Helen said.

“We talked about everything. We made a lot of plans for the future on this boat. I knew a lot about Corey and what his wishes were, if anything happened to him.”

The couple had known each other their whole lives and began attending school together in kindergarten.

She said her husband often seemed impassive and serious, but behind the facade was a deeply kind and caring man.

“As soon as he smiled, you knew he was a good man, a very good man,” she said.

“He did everything for his community. He loved his children. His children were everything to him.”

His two daughters, Allyson and Kaylee, are nurses and are struggling to return to work while they mourn their father, Helen said.

She now asked the following questions: “What would he want me to do? What would Corey do?” help guide her.

“It's definitely a struggle. I realized I always knew he cared for me, but I never realized how much. I missed him,” she said.

Corey Comperatore was honored at the Republican National Convention (RNC) in July, with his helmet and coat on display on stage as Trump spoke.

Helen said at the July rally that Corey had hoped — and joked — that Trump might call her on stage.

The family watched the RNC moment on television, after Trump informed Helen of the planned tribute.

“And I just cried because I said he had his moment on stage with Trump,” she said. “So, you know, it was kind of a nice moment, but it was a sad moment at the same time.”
