The former Prime Minister gives a vivid insight into his leadership during the Covid crisis: he describes how he came close to “getting rid of it” when he was hospitalized with the virus in April 2020; he describes his exaltation (“kerchingeroo”) at the success of the Oxford/AstraZeneca vaccine; he recalls how – when the EU seized millions of doses from a Dutch warehouse – he asked whether British special forces could be deployed to recover them (before dismissing the idea as “crazy”); and he insists that reports of wild parties and other breaches of Covid rules in Downing Street have been absurdly exaggerated by his political enemies and embittered former advisers. “I didn’t see any cake,” he said. “I didn't eat any flower cakes. If it was a party, it was the weakest event in the history of human festivities.”
The 'mind-blowing anecdotes' don't quite ring true

Big Dog is back, said Alice Thomson in The timeswith a memoir filled with “bold, joyous bumps” and “seductive alliterations.” Unleashed is clearly a lot of fun: much more than anything produced by David Cameron or 'wilted lettuce'. But then you remember: this “clown” was Prime Minister during a global pandemic; and he produces this – a book with little serious analysis, it seems, but lots of “mind-blowing anecdotes” that don’t quite ring true. Did he really plan to invade a NATO ally? Was he really taken offshore aboard an Argos inflatable kayak in Scotland in 2020? Did he really not see a cake? I know three people who were there and I say he was definitely “ambushed” by one of them.

Funny stories mixed with “personal attacks”
Most political memoirs are exercises in manipulation, Sean O'Grady said in The Independent; but they usually make efforts to “find the truth halfway.” Johnson, by contrast, continues to insist that he was unfairly removed from office – but gives no details of where or how Sue Gray, or the Standards Committee, made errors of judgment. Similarly, he says he now believes the Covid virus was created in a Chinese laboratory, but does not say what led him to this conclusion, or why he thought otherwise at the time.
This lazy book seems to boil down to a series of amusing, if self-mythological, stories mixed with “personal attacks” on people who got in its way. Some of them – like his “misogynistic” attack against Theresa May, which he lingers on – are even unworthy of him.
