“Israel creates excuses to legitimize its policy of invasion and occupation”
President Recep Tayyip Erdoan criticized Israel for finding new excuses to legitimize its policy of occupation and invasion.
“Hamas and Hezbollah are just a pretext. Israel creates pretexts every day for its policy of occupation and invasion,” Erdoan told a meeting of his ruling Justice Party and Development (AKP), at the Hali Congress Center in Istanbul on Saturday.
Stressing that Trkiye will continue to stand in solidarity with the Palestinians, Erdoan said that Trkiye is the only country that has imposed economic sanctions on Israel.
“We have been defending the same values since day one. We never hesitate to say the same things in the UN as in Trkiye,” Erdoan said, adding that Trkiye is against all oppressors.
Erdoan said Israel's target is clear and Western countries continue to remain silent against Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his “slaughter squad” even though they know his intentions, mainly because they are ashamed of the Holocaust.
The president went on to criticize the West for claiming to defend freedoms but failing to uphold them when it comes to the issue of Palestine and protesters defending the rights of Palestinian children.
“They can't even tolerate the Palestinian flag. They say protests are sacred when it comes to terrorist groups. [referring to the PKK/YPG] but when it comes to Palestine, they defend the harshest type of fascism,” Erdoan said. He went on to say that he calls on all countries that spoil the Israeli government to act with common sense.
Trkiye has sharply criticized Israel's brutal offensive in Gaza, which he and others say amounts to genocide. He also criticized many Western allies for their support of Israel and repeatedly called for Muslim unity to facilitate a desperately needed ceasefire. Ankara urges Israel to follow the Palestinians' constructive approach in ceasefire negotiations and for the international community to put pressure on Netanyahu's government. Trkiye also formally requested to join South Africa's initiative to have Israel tried for genocide before the International Court of Justice (ICJ).
Ankara has sought to mobilize Muslim and Arab countries to oppose Israeli aggression and has been a strong supporter of the Palestinian cause. He joined a diplomatic group made up of ministers from various countries who carried out a mission around the world to secure more action from the international community to end Israeli attacks targeting innocent Palestinians and for lasting peace.
