Khan's party says Pakistani authorities are detaining one of its main allies

Islamabad, October 5 (EFE).- The head of the provincial government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Ali Amin Gandapur, one of the main allies of the imprisoned former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan, was arrested at his home in Islamabad, Khans Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf. Later, another influential PTI personality, Muhammad Ali Saif, said that Gandapur had not been formally arrested and had been released on bail until October 25 next year.

The PTI called for protests on Friday in the capital and several neighboring towns, which ultimately resulted in the arrest of around 30 protesters and authorities using tear gas to disperse Khan's supporters.

Protests are expected to continue on Saturday in Lahore, capital of East Punjab and the country's second most populous city.

Metal containers have been installed around Lahore to block access to the city, and emergency measures preventing gatherings of more than four people remain in force in several parts of the country.

In Islamabad, where the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit will be held on October 15 and 16, which Indian Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar is expected to attend, the Interior Ministry has deployed military troops to ensure security until October 17, local media reported.

Khan's PTI has called for more marches in recent weeks to protest the arrest of its leader, who has been jailed since August last year on hundreds of charges.

Although the former prime minister's party won the largest number of seats in February's general elections, it was unable to form a government due to a series of legal and political obstacles.
