Donald Trump returned to the site where he survived an assassination attempt in Butler, Pennsylvania – and started with a joke.

“Thank you,” he told a large crowd, which reportedly numbered in the tens of thousands. “Thank you very much. We love Pennsylvania and, as I said…” – which drew cheers from the audience.

He added: “I come back to Butler to deliver a simple message… We are going to make America great again, we are going to win the election.”

Of the assassination attempt, Mr. Trump said the shooter “aimed to silence me and the MAGA movement.”

He continued: “For 16 seconds, time stood still as this vicious monster unleashed pure evil. This villain did not succeed.”

Discussing his campaign for the White House, he promised to cut energy prices in half, pledged big tax cuts and claimed that his Democratic rival, Kamala Harris, was decidedly left-wing.

He also promised that the United States would “reach Mars” before the end of his second term, if re-elected, and promised “no men in women's sports.”

Shortly after Mr. Trump began speaking, the crowd chanted “Corey,” referring to firefighter Corey Comperatore, who died while protecting his family from gunfire on July 13.

At 6:11 p.m., as the shots rang out, Mr. Trump called for a minute of silence. A bell rang four times, one for each of the four victims, including him.

Some in the crowd chanted “Fight, fight, fight” – the slogan Mr Trump used to rally his supporters moments after he was shot.

He then repeated the phrase himself, while his running mate, JD Vance, said the former president “took a bullet for democracy.”

There was a pause while a member of the crowd was treated by medics — and a spontaneous rendition of the U.S. national anthem.

Elon Musk, the tycoon behind Tesla and SpaceX, briefly took the stage and urged people to register to vote.

The entrepreneur said there is no truer test than courage under fire. Apparently referring to Joe Biden, he said the United States previously had a presidential candidate who “couldn't walk up a flight of stairs” and another who shouted “fight, fight, fight.”

Additionally, he said Mr. Trump must win next month's presidential election “to preserve the Constitution” and “preserve democracy in America.”

“This is a must-win situation,” Mr. Musk said.

Poignant but deliberately political – Trump returns to Butler

It was always likely that Donald Trump would return to Butler; that he would like to return to the place where he almost died.

That moment, exactly twelve weeks ago, was more than a near-death experience. For his most loyal followers, this underscores the increasingly divine status he carries.

In the crowd, the Trump signs had been redrawn: “Trump” replaced by “Jesus”. A supporter arrived pulling a life-size crucifix.

As always, the choreography was, for the audience, perfect. Top Gun's theme music filled the Pennsylvania countryside as his plane, named TRUMP, flew low.

Mr. Trump was back on the grounds of the Butler Farm Show – the place where a bullet appeared to have hit his ear in July.

He was thrown from the stage with blood streaming down his face, in one of the defining images of this year's campaign.

Thomas Matthew Crooks of Bethel Park, Pennsylvania, opened fire from an unsecured roof before being shot.

The motive for this shooting is still unknown. The incident raised serious questions about security failures within the Secret Service.

Its director, Kimberly Cheatle, resigned less than two weeks after the shooting.

A second assassination attempt on Mr Trump reportedly took place last month when a gunman hid undetected for nearly 12 hours at the former president's golf course in West Palm Beach, Florida , intending to kill him, prosecutors said.

The suspected shooter was arrested by a Secret Service agent who was patrolling the course in front of the former president.
