Imran Khan's party chief 'invites' S Jaishankar to join Pakistan protests

A leader of jailed former Prime Minister Imran Khan's Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party said his party plans to “invite” Foreign Minister S Jaishankar to join its protests here, triggering heated protests response from the ruling coalition on Saturday. Mr. Jaishankar will attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organization Heads of Government Council (SCO-CHG) meeting in Pakistan on October 15-16.

Muhammad Ali Saif, information adviser to the chief minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province ruled by Khan's Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party, invited Mr Jaishankar to join the ongoing protests in a speech in a Geo News program Friday evening.

“PTI will invite Jaishankar, the Indian Foreign Minister, to come and join the PTI protest, speak to our people and see that Pakistan is a strong democracy where everyone has the right to protest,” said sarcastically Mr. Saif in response to a question.

Reacting strongly, Attaullah Tarar, Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting and leader of the main ruling partner Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), said Mr. Saif's invitation to the Indian minister of Foreign Affairs was “highly irresponsible” and amounted to “enmity”. to Pakistan.”

Sarjeel Memon, information minister of Sindh province and leader of another ruling partner, the Pakistan People's Party (PPP), said: “Today, PTI is inviting Jaishankar to its rally and tomorrow, he will call the Israeli Prime Minister for this purpose. This party is anti-Pakistan. and wants to sabotage the SCO summit with its protests.”

Defense Minister Khawaja Asif said the PTI's invitation to Mr Jaishankar “questioned the credibility of Khan's party”.

However, after strong reactions from government ministers, Mr Saif said his statement regarding Mr Jaishankar had been taken out of context.

The PTI has staged protests, saying the government should adhere to the constitution, pushing for the independence of the judiciary against rising inflation, and also demanding the release of its 72-year-old founder.

Currently incarcerated in Adilala Prison in Rawalpindi, Khan was arrested on August 5, 2023. Facing dozens of cases, he was found guilty in a few of them.

On Saturday, Pakistan Army troops were deployed in Islamabad to provide security ahead of the PTI protest rally at D-Chowk. The army would remain in the city from October 5 to 17 to maintain public order in anticipation of the next SCO, the government had announced.

Authorities took strict measures to prevent PTI from entering Islamabad, blocking all highways leading to the city, banning passenger travel and suspending mobile phone services.

Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code, which prohibits public gatherings, political rallies and demonstrations, has also been imposed in the twin cities of Rawalpindi and Islamabad to prohibit any political meetings or demonstrations.
