Elon Musk joins former US president on stage

Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump returned Saturday to the site of a campaign rally where he was nearly assassinated in July, calling his would-be assassin a “vicious monster.” He also invited billionaire Elon Musk on stage at Pennsylvania's Butler, calling him “an incredible guy.”

“As I was saying,” Trump said as he began speaking behind bulletproof glass, pretending to resume the speech interrupted when he was grazed in the ear by a bullet on July 13.

“Exactly 12 weeks ago tonight, on this very ground, a cold-blooded assassin sought to silence me,” he told thousands of his supporters.

The shooter, identified as Thomas Matthew Crooks, 20, had climbed onto a nearby roof with a direct line of sight to where Trump was speaking. He was then shot and killed by a Secret Service agent.

As blood streamed down his face, Trump raised his fist and shouted “fight, fight, fight” at his supporters, an image that went viral on social media.

At Saturday's rally, Musk praised Trump and attacked US President Joe Biden.

“We had a president who couldn't walk up a flight of stairs and another who shook his fist after being shot,” he said.

It was the first time Musk, owner of social media platform X, attended a Trump campaign rally since endorsing him on July 13.

Trump “must win to preserve democracy in America,” Musk said, calling the 2024 U.S. presidential vote “the most important election of our lifetimes.”

“There is no greater test than courage under fire,” he said.

Ask everyone you know and everyone you don't know to register to vote, he told Republican supporters. If they don't, it will be the last election. This is my prediction.

“Fight, fight, fight, vote, vote, vote,” he said at the end of his nearly seven-minute speech.

He then took to his official

“America will become a one-party socialist state, just like what happened to California, where they just made requiring voter ID illegal,” he said.

JD Vance, Trump's running mate, also spoke at the rally, which took place exactly a month before the November 5 presidential election.

“Donald Trump took a bullet for democracy. What did you do?” Vance said in an apparent attack on Democratic candidate Kamala Harris.
