The incident was highlighted in a report by the US Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF), which accused China of strengthening its control over religion, particularly Catholic and Protestant Christianity, by removing crosses, replacing religious images with political images and by censoring religious texts. .

This repression affected Buddhists, Catholics, Protestants, Muslims, and Taoists, and many religious elements were suppressed because they did not fit the state's agenda.
Restrictions on religious practice have worsened since 2018, with revised regulations on religious affairs imposing stricter government controls. This particularly affected informal “house churches” that were not state-sanctioned, leading to increased surveillance, closures, and arrests of religious leaders.
Christians in China have reported increased surveillance, with commercial landlords refusing to rent premises to unauthorized churches due to pressure from authorities. Children are also strictly prohibited from receiving religious education, with the state aggressively enforcing these rules.
